A Rainbow Invitation

Enough of the drab days of winter! While we are biding our time waiting for spring, I thought I'd throw a little colour into the blogosphere.

I was thinking of the colours of the rainbow, and our good friend Roy G Biv. I thought it would be fun to find a flower for each of the colours. I have absolutely no red in my garden, so I had to find an ancient picture, taken a few cameras ago. I'd love for others to join me in this 'Rainbow Challenge', it's always fun to look through old pictures during the dark cold days of winter. Anything garden related is welcome.

Red: Amarylis

Orange: Thunbergia, Black Eyed Susan Vine

Yellow: Daylily Hemorocalis 'Bonanza'

Green: Hosta 'Francee'

Blue: Dwarf Delphinium 'Blue Elf'

Indigo: Perennial Sage

Violet: Lobelia

And of course pictures of actual rainbows are always welcome.

Anyone care to join me? Here's a list of participants to date, if I've forgotten to add your post, please send me a reminder since it was in no way intentional.

Thanks so much for your great contributions!

  1. Hi Rebecca,

This is an excellent idea for a post! What beautiful flowers you have in each color of the rainbow. It has brightened my day :^)

  2. Great idea! Especially now when there is not a lot of color in the garden.
I will try to do a similar post, but I see that I might be missing indigo...

  3. Rececca, I would have loved to, but holidays await!

  4. Rebecca ! this is beautiful : ) I have been looking at my old garden pictures and they do lift your spirits up so much (especially after certain machinery FAILED miserably ? haha)
Love all the plants for their specific colour and what a RAINBOW !!! I would love to capture one as great as that .. fantastic job girl !!

  5. P.S. Rebecca I forgot to tell you how much I like your header picture ! It is beautiful and so darn cheerful you have to feel brighter just looking at it ! : )

  6. I love your header too. This is a great idea for a post. It's gray, drizzly and in the low 40's here, so any color would be welcome. I think I'll go through last year's pictures and put together a similar post -- a good way to combat the winter blahs!

  7. Thanks everyone!! I'm so flattered that you like my rainbow shot, and my header picture. The bed in the header is my problem child, and has been a source of frustration. It's in almost full shade, and has bulbs in the spring then a mix of annuals & perennials in the summer, but I always find it to lack cohesiveness. Looking back now though, it does look pretty good..

Noelle, thank you for your lovely words!

vrtlarica, I look forward to your post. Indigo is difficult, I found the blue/indigo/violet part a little confusing.

    Deborah, have a great time!

Joy, Thanks so much for your great posts, I'm glad I could brighten you day, especially after your mechanical failure lol. Your sky shots are lovely, I just got lucky with the rainbow, it was very close by so I could photograph it from home with my inexpensive Canon.

sweet bay, Thanks for the lovely compliment, let me know if you put a post together and I'll add a link to my post.

Tammy, Hi & Welcome! Thanks for the lovely compliment. The rainbow was across the street from my house, so I was able to photograph it from my balcony, even with my little point & shoot. :)

  8. Rebecca what a wonderful post of color and a fab idea. Now I will have to go searching in the flower vault. ;-) The orange may be a problem.

  9. Rebecca, This is a delightful idea. As soon as I get a chance (probably next week), I'll get some photos together and post my own garden rainbow. Thanks for the invitation. -Jean

  10. Hi Lona, Terrific! Let me know when your post is up and I'll add it too the list. Funny how many people have a 'problem' colour, I hadn't realized I'd been avoiding red til I came up with this post. :)

Hi Jean, I'm glad you like my idea, it was a fun post to put together and I thought others might like it too. Do let me know when you post so I can add a link. :)

Hi Catherine, Thanks so much for your great message! I look forward to seeing your post, I'm sure it will be stunning, I love the BES vine too, it grew an inch or more a day for months, and bloomed profusely, I love watching it grow and change every day.

Hi Karly, Welcome & thanks for posting. Very interesting perspective, since we're in the throws of winter the rainbow pictures seem to give off a feeling of warmth, but I can also see how they would give off a feeling of cool & refreshing since they are associated with rain. Regardless, they are always special. ~Rebecca

Hi Beth, Welcome and thanks so much for finding my blog & participating in my little challenge. I truly hope spring isn't too far off, but we did just get a bunch more snow, so it's back to feeling like winter. The mid January thaw had us fooled for a while, but reality has set in again.

  68. So I'm still learning how the blogosphere works lol. As I commented before I was inspired to make a rainbow from your post. Even though I mentioned it was your idea, and posted a link to your blog (to make sure I gave you all the credit), I didn't know that I was supposed to comment back on your page again with a link to my rainbow post lol. Diana from "Elephant's Eye" pointed that out to me (and about your list), so I thought I'd come back and post my link (a little late) lol.
